Cushing community inspired by MLK and Black History Month “Engage Challenge”

Beginning on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January, Cushing began several weeks' worth of planned activities and learning opportunities to honor and celebrate Black History.

Black History Month's roots can be traced to historian Carter G. Woodson who, bothered by the omission of American's Black population in textbooks, sought to rightly recognize the role of Black Americans in American history. Black history IS American history.

As Black History Month kicks off, Cushing asks our entire community to challenge themselves to engage:

Regardless of the depth of current knowledge, we encourage students and adults to push their levels of awareness and understanding. Know just a little? Move beyond a superficial understanding of Black History, beyond awareness of only the most celebrated Black Americans. Got a good grasp? Deepen your knowledge. Delve into information about the countless Black people whose expertise, talents, and humanitarian contributions have bettered the world. Regardless of the depth of current knowledge, we hope our community members see and experience the joy that comes with Black excellence.
