Boys' Hockey: Watkins Tournament Champions!
Cushing Captures Title With 2-1 Win Over Thayer Academy
It was an epic matchup as Cushing hosted Thayer Academy in the final game of the 2018 Edward G. Watkins Boys' Invitational Hockey Tournament. Cushing's path to the final, in the Fisher Division, included comeback wins against Northfield Mount Hermon and Lawrence Academy (shootout), and a solid 7-3 win over Governor's Academy. Thayer took the Iorio Division with victories against Canterbury School, Culver Military Academy (last year's champion), and a tie against Dexter Southfield.
After a scoreless opening period, the Penguins were spectacular in the second period, scoring twice. Thayer replied in the third period with a goal of their own, but the Penguins hung on to the delight of many family, friends, students, and faculty in attendance.
Brad Zona was in the zone as he logged the majority of defensive minutes, in all situations, and often against Thayer's most dangerous forwards. His tenacious penalty killing, relentless physical play, and tireless effort was instrumental in leading the Penguins. Up front it was Jacob Banks who was money; he scored both Penguin goals in the 2-1 victory.
Jake Hewitt, Patrick Keegan, and Banks were named to the All-Tournament Team. Goalie Joe Sharib was named Tournament MVP.
The next action for the Penguins will be a home game on Saturday, January 5, 2019. The 5pm game against Brewster Academy will be the third of a four-game Pink the Rink event at Iorio Arena.
