Coach Merrill was my very first coach/mentor when I stepped foot onto the Cushing campus during freshman preseason for volleyball. I was scared, homesick, lonely, all you can imagine as a 14 year old kid off the rez from AZ. She was like a motherly figure full of excitement, encouragement, and just a love of the sport. Although I was not a great player, she was constantly saying great job, that's ok, you'll get it next time, good effort - just full of positivity. That kind of coaching really lifted me up and inspired me to try harder, get better, and love the sport. Coach Merrill was never down on us, even if we lost, she kept up our spirits and focused on all the great moments of the match. She's just a shining ray of light in the coaching world, and I'll never forget her style of coaching - I've tried to embody that positive spirit in all aspects of my life!
