Snapshots: 1941-1943

1941: 3 buildings and 1 covered wooden grandstand in the lower field. Coach Heslin greets football player candidates. Lose only 1 game to Worcester. Awakened by earthquake tremor in middle of the night. Spraying the outdoor hockey rink (our only one) with fire hoses with coaches Heslin and Lampson. Pearl Harbor? Where’s Pearl Harbor? Headmaster Quimby drives a representative group of us to the wake of Don Linsey, killed in auto accident over Christmas vacation. Students with tanks on their backs help fight forest fire.
1942: Captains of Cushing (me), and Worcester ex teammates at Winthrop High shake hands midfield. Bette Davis to kiss winning captain. She didn’t show. We win, go undefeated. In the bell tower plane spotting. 18-year-olds register for the draft. All sports teams have a good year.
1943: As aviation cadet in Alabama take naval recognition course, Coach Heslin, officer, teaching course. Invited to dinner, Penny, his wife, makes pecan pie with pecans picked from her own tree out front. Don’t see coach again until his retirement party, names every captain. Don’t see him again.
